Are you confused about IP Ratings? Just what is an IP Rating and what does it mean?
Why is an IP Rating Important?
There are many marketing terms used for products such as "water resistant" or "water-proof", but we need to go further and understand exactly what these terms mean. IP Ratings establish a level of conformity beyond descriptive terms that are used to promote a product.
How are IP Ratings Established?
When a manufacturer wants an IP Rating for their product, they must have it tested by an independent and certified company. The testing company certifies the numerical IP Rating of that product to signify how well the item protects against intrusion of solids as well as liquids. Having an IP Rating is having the ability to back up the claims or features that are touted about a specific product.
How to Read IP Ratings
IP Ratings represent the level of protection provided by a device against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids. An IP Rating usually has two numbers:
